Seven students from five West Austin schools won National Merit scholarships this year, with a couple of those scholarships sponsored by corporations and colleges.
Caleb Kim and Ella McKenna from Regents School received National Merit Scholarship awards. Ella’s award was sponsored by Texas A&M University where she will probably study electrical engineering, and Caleb plans to study bioengineering.
From McCallum High School, Anna Ward and Shoshanna Witchel also received National Merit Scholarship awards, with Anna planning to study aerospace engineering and Shoshanna headed towards mathematics as her field.
St. Andrew’s Presley Kuo, who plans to study computer science, received a corporation-sponsored National Merit Scholarship award from Johnson & Johnson.
Annie Ehrlich from St. Stephen’s received a National Merit Scholarship award, and she plans to study science policy.
Phoebe Miller, an Austin High graduate, will study surgical medicine with her National Merit Scholarship award.
These awards were announced by National Merit Scholarship Corporation this summer as these students prepared to attend their freshman year of college. These students are among 6,700 National Merit academic champions this year who have won scholarships worth about $24 million.
