A trip to Rome to see the Sistine Chapel would require a passport, extensive planning, time off from work or school, and several thousand dollars. Thanks to Sistine Chapel Experience, LLC and its founder, Penn Parrish, a longtime West Austin resident, the public can experience the beauty and history of this masterpiece up close for a modest ticket price and a short drive to Barton Creek Square.
For Penn Parrish, the arrival of the Sistine Chapel Experience in West Austin is more than an exhibit; it is the continuation of a story that began when he was just 10 years old.
As a child, Parrish traveled to Europe to meet his grandmother, a Fort Worth native and Peace Corps volunteer who had taken up global service in her late 70s. During that trip, she brought him to the Sistine Chapel. At the time, the experience was quiet and unhurried, far removed from the dense crowds that fill the chapel today. Standing inside that historic space left a lasting impression on him, sparking a lifelong fascination with art and storytelling.
He would go on to visit the chapel nearly ten times, deepening his appreciation for its beauty and complexity. That passion eventually led him to co-found a company dedicated to making great works of art more accessible through immersive exhibits. Today, that vision is on display in the town he calls home.
Parrish shared his hope for the local exhibit: “We bring Rome to those who can’t get there. Our patrons are immersed in an up-close experience with the Renaissance masters who painted this magnificent chapel.”
The exhibit, developed in collaboration with a partner associated with Vatican-authorized imagery, debuted internationally in Poland before expanding to the United States. Bringing it to Austin required an ambitious transformation. After an extensive search for the right location, Parrish and his team converted a former automotive space into a 25,000-square-foot exhibition hall in just 45 days.
What visitors will find is not a traditional museum display, but a carefully designed environment that allows them to experience the artwork in a way that even a visit to Italy often cannot. Instead of craning their necks nearly 70 feet overhead, guests can view Michelangelo’s famous ceiling at a height of 16 feet. The exhibit highlights the earlier Renaissance masters who filled the chapel walls, including Sandro Botticelli and Pietro Perugino, displaying the life of Moses (Old Testament) on one side and the life of Christ (New Testament) on the other.
The well-organized experience will capture visitors' full attention. Gallery 1 introduces visitors to the origins of the Sistine Chapel, tracing its history from its founding by Pope Sixtus IV in 1473 to the completion of Michelangelo’s iconic ceiling in 1512. Gallery 2 offers a cinematic prelude: a 15-minute film produced by Hollywood filmmakers Gary Lucchesi and James Younger that sets the stage for the exhibit’s main feature in Gallery 3. There, a projector-driven installation recreates the chapel at full scale, matching its length and width while lowering the ceiling, allowing visitors to view the masters’ brushwork up close in a detailed reproduction of the space.
Whether you are a lifelong art enthusiast or simply curious, this exhibit transforms a visit to Barton Creek Square into a journey across time and continents, bringing the wonder of the Sistine Chapel within reach of the Austin community.
