- What’s something about you that not many people know?
Gosh, I can’t think of anything in that regard that anyone would actually be better off knowing.
- What was your first job?
Checker at an old HEB in San Marcos that no longer exists.
- If you could have dinner with three people – dead or alive, at any time in history—who would they be?
Deceased family and friends I miss, but that list is too long. So I’ll say ancestors I never got to meet: My grandfather Rev. William George Crook on my dad’s side who preached for many years in Aransas Pass (he died before I was born,) and my great great grandmother Margaret Unthank Holdsworth on my mom’s side, who died in childbirth in England, leaving her husband and surviving son to migrate to Texas and homestead in Zavala County. For the third, I’ll include a non-relative, the writer Charles Portis. I’d be too awestruck to talk to him, but I think he’d be lovely to sit with.
- If you had to pick three musicians for a playlist, who would they be?
Let’s just say when I’m driving I switch back and forth between Willie’s Roadhouse and Sixties on Six.
- Favorite book and TV show?
True Grit for the book, Lonesome Dove as the mini-series.
- Most powerful movie you have seen?
Schindler’s List.
- Favorite place in Austin?
The room in my house that I use for an office.
- Favorite restaurant and watering hole
- What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A ballet dancer or gymnast. (According to my mom, I was actually pretty good.) Or a guitarist and singer. (According to just about everyone, I was ((ha!)) no good.) Or, of course, a novelist.
- Which living person do you most admire?
I’m drawing a blank on this one. I admire people for different reasons, but tend to admire them most after they’re dead.
- What makes you happy?
Family and friends. Writing a good paragraph. Time on a porch with a nice view and a great book.
- Best advice you ever received?
That nobody’s really looking.
