Dr. Tom McHorse has worked for 50 years to expand access to health care and ensure seniors can safely stay in their homes through work at Volunteer Healthcare Clinic and advocacy through the Travis County Medical Society. He will be honored on Feb. 12 for his service at a gala celebrating the clinic’s 60 years in Austin.
McHorse, a longtime gastroenterologist, has been a volunteer physician for the Volunteer Healthcare Clinic since 1976 and served as the clinic’s Medical Director since 2026, just recently stepping down. He continues to serve on the clinic’s board.
During his tenure, patient access for primary care has expanded significantly, with the clinic now providing over 4,600 patient visits annually from volunteer physicians, nurses, pharmacists and translators to medically uninsured adults and children in our community.
McHorse and his wife Kay are Charter Members of Capital City Village, a volunteer-run organization dedicated to helping seniors safely remain in their homes and avoid social isolation. He was the founding chair of the Travis County Medical Society’s Project Access, offering pro bono medical visits and specialty care to indigent residents, and has served at the medical society’s president.
McHorse has led a life of service, including medical mission trips with Tarrytown Methodist, board members of local organizations, and Cub Scout leader. The McHorses have been married 59 years, and are the lucky ones who have their three sons and their families all in Austin.
Volunteer Healthcare Clinic is hosting Have A Heart For Dr. McHorse on Feb. 12 the Austin Club – a milestone celebration honoring McHorse and the clinic’s 60th anniversary, and tables, sponsorships, and tickets are available at www.volclinic.org as well as complete information.
