In high school, I learned traditional Basque dance.
- What was your first job?
An officer in the Army of Spain
- You can have dinner with three people – dead or alive, any time in history—who would they be?
My mother, father, and brother: I could not have enough dinners with them while they were alive.
- What’s on your music playlist?
A little bit of everything and a lot of classical guitar music.
- Favorite book and/or TV show?
For books: “Memoirs of Hadrian” by Marguerite Yourcenar. This is a book about the life and reflections on life of Roman Emperor Hadrian. Yourcenar writes this book as a testamentary letter by Emperor Hadrian to his successor, Marcus Aurelius. It is as beautifully written as it is deep. My brother introduced me to this book.
As for TV shows, my all-time favorites are all the different Star Trek series. I started watching them when I was a child: “Live long and prosper.”
- Most powerful movie that you have seen?
“Dersu Uzala,” directed by Akira Kurosawa, based on a book by the same title written by Vladimir Arseniev. It provides a wonderful window into how the same moments in nature are perceived by different people, shaped by their life experiences, and how those experiences shape the bonds they create among humans.
- What makes you happy?
To learn, to create, and to give.

The Butler Trail
- Favorite restaurant in Austin?
Uhmmm! Difficult to answer, but I like to go to Uchiba, The Kimberly, and Jeffrey’s
- What living person do you most admire?
Each of the people who put their lives at risk for the well-being of others.
