Louis Shanks Furniture is closing its doors on Anderson Lane after 78 years as an Austin institution. Also closing is the San Antonio location of Louis Shanks Furniture as the chain liquidates merchandise and inventory at the two remaining stores. Louis Shanks partnered with John Stanford in 1945 to open the Congress Avenue store, and four generations of the Shanks family has been part of moves and expansions to Lamar Blvd. in 1954, to 2930 W Anderson Lane in 1974, and to stores in San Antonio and Houston in 1983 and 1995.
